Chapter Twenty-Three

“You have to tell me that you have something planned! You’re not just sitting back allowing them to get away with this lie?!” Now she fully understood what Rafe said when he told her that it was a battle of public opinion. Galatian men were not the best communicators. What were they doing to counteract these lies?

Tam was now standing, and she placed a hand on Karma’s shoulder. “There is a lot more, sis. A lot that they think they know. But they are running scared. They’re trying to get as many people on their side as they can because they don’t have everybody fooled.”

Karma studied Tam, her agitation reducing. “Okay.”

“Remember when Rafe and the others were talking to the other Galatian Guards all over the world?”

“Little good that did. They wouldn’t raise a hand to help us when we needed them the most.”

“Do you know that the fight that day lasted less than an hour?” Karma shrugged in confusion. It felt like a lifetime. Tam continued. “A lot of Galatians came to join the fight; from all over the world, sis.” Tam smiled, but there was something fierce instead of pleasant about it. “They thought it was the beginning of the war. They thought it was time to overthrow the Queens. Karma, they came in a force of thousands—all ready to overthrow the Queens!”

“Then why haven’t we?”

“Because this war can only be fought once. We have one chance to overthrow the Queens, to maintain our protection by the Collective and to gain equality for us all.

“The Galatian Guards, which are stationed all over the universe, are strategists. The Queens are scrappers—they can fight, but they can’t outfight the Guards. Guardians were trained to do nothing more than to defend! In fact, some are now referring to them as Defenders.

“Many still find it hard to reconcile what it means to turn on the Queens. But they are waking up to the inequities between the Queens and themselves.”

Karma was beginning to feel a bit better. “What do you mean they don’t have everyone fooled?”

Tam straightened in pride. “I’m a soldier, Karma—but not for the Galatian Guard. I fight for the Resistance.”

Karma was now more confused than ever. “But they’re our enemies, aren’t they? They hate consorts and interspecies mating—they’ve been trying to overthrow the Exchange for generations.”

“Did you hear how Mayva’s speech was directed at the supporters of the Exchange; the rich, the government officials—those that are in control?” Karma nodded.

“When our mates were trying to gain the allegiance of the other Guards around the world, they did it by pointing out how the poor were being mistreated by the human government, paralleling that to the Galatian male’s inequality by the Queens.

“All over the world, the Defenders began to address the human-on-human mistreatment. Just like our men did in our city, the Guardian started getting rid of the bad officials and giving the street people responsibilities that used to be given only to government employees.”

“That’s exactly what our goal is for all people,” Karma said.
